Brighter Future Summer School: Call for participants

BRIGHTER FUTURE SUMMER SCHOOL:
29 Aug. – 2 Sept. 2022

University of Groningen (NL)

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 10th JUNE

Description

Children who are temporarily or permanently unable to live with their families – such as children in foster or residential care, adopted children or unaccompanied migrant children – are entitled to special protection and assistance. Besides having experienced the separation of their first parental figures, they might have faced other forms of early adversity, such as abuse, negligence or institutionalization, that may have affected their development patterns in several levels, including emotional skills and learning trajectories. Scientific literature has recursively pointed out that this group presents higher prevalence of school and relational difficulties, as well as higher risk of social exclusion during adulthood. School should be for them not only a place where they feel safe and welcome, but also a space to minimize the impact of adversity experiences and develop their full potential.

The main aim of this Summer School is to present innovative research that facilitates the development of inclusive practices and appropriate answers to the needs of students who have experienced early adversity. International experts will provide participants with tools to design interventions in the education system that counteract educational and psychosocial disadvantages.

The topics of this Summer School include, among others, the school as a community, the role of school in safeguarding young people’s wellbeing and resilience, ecological perspectives on adverse childhood experiences and trauma, strategies and tools for building relationships at school, the child’s story at school.

The Summer school stems from the cooperation between researchers, professionals, and families from Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and United Kingdom within the framework of the Brighter Future Erasmus+ project. It is designed for PhD and other posgraduated students, postdoctoral fellows, and practitioners in the field of children and adolescents education. During the summer school, the students will be involved in lectures, workshops, discussions, data analysis, hands-on activities and reflective practices.
